My 6 year old son discovered my box of journals a few months back. I’ve kept a journal consistently since I was 6 years so my son had a blast laughing at my spelling mistakes and reading about the silly things I was worried about. After spending a few days being thoroughly entertained by my first diary, a pink thing with hearts and a lock that didn’t require much effort to crack, he decided that he wanted a journal of his own. I’ve seen the benefits of journaling in my own life and as an English major and homeschooling mom, I’m was thrilled to encourage him my son in something that would help written and verbal skills grow.
The problem was, we couldn’t find a journal that would work. He was determined to have a journal with a lock, but not any lock, it had to be a lock with a combination rather than a key. Apparently they don’t make those anymore. The other problem was, I’m not sure many people are journaling anymore, at least not hand written ones, because I had a hard time finding any and the few that are out there are clearly designed for girls.
Since a locking diary is out of the picture I’ve just been hunting for anything that will work because my son’s 7th birthday is coming up soon and I want to make sure and get him a journal before he loses interest in it. I came across a great deal on photo journals from Walmart.com today thanks to PYP and it was perfect. The journals are on sale for only $10.00. I was charged about $0.80 in tax and nothing for shipping and I was able to put the journal together in under 5 minutes using a picture of my son that was taken earlier this year. Great deal!
Now I just need to find a locking box to put the thing in since apparently anything that is written in the journal will be top secret.
